What does it mean to participate in Gay Pride?

The gay pride is an annual event celebrating LGBTQ+ diversity and pride with very deep roots dating back to 1969 when a series of riots and protests, known as the Stonewall Riots, against frequent police raids on venues frequented by LGBTQ+ people. These riots, which lasted for several days, marked the beginning of gay people’s rights claims that helped mobilize and unite the community in a struggle for equality and civil rights.

Since then, Gay Pride has spread around the world, becoming an annual event of celebration, commemoration and vindication for the LGBTQ+ community. The streets and venues of cities fill with rainbow flags in a festive atmosphere that culminates in the gay pride parade, the signature march of all gay pride parades.

In addition to the celebration, gay pride is, above all, an opportunity to organize educational moments and to renew or promote commitment in the fight against homophobia, transphobia and towards all kinds of discrimination. It is a time to raise awareness by society about the issues and problems that LGBTQ+ people still experience nowadays and is an opportunity to promote a more inclusive world where everyone can feel free to live their sexual orientation or gender identity without experiencing discrimination.
