An Italian Christmas? Here are the 5 Italian cities to (re)see during the holidays
So far, we’ve traveled far and wide between European countries and exotic destinations for your (or your) next Christmas trip, without thinking that Italy also has many destinations to see for the upcoming holidays. Indeed, our country can count on a vast historical and culinary tradition, artistic beauty envied by all, and an openness to LGBT tourism that has taken hold especially in the last decade (although it doesn’t look like it). So if you haven’t managed to book a trip abroad for Christmas, here you can find 5 destinationsi of proximity to experience the holidays in total relaxation, with an eye on the wallet but a keen eye on entertainment and good food. Thanks to long-distance trains, these destinations we have selected are easily accessible. All that remains is to pack your bags and…hit the road.
Christmas in Trento and Bolzano
Two cities that are real gems. The first is a provincial capital that lives for tourism all year round but at Christmas – thanks to its markets – becomes a crossroads of encounters; the second, on the other hand, is an almost European city, bright, full of life and to be experienced throughout. Both Trento and Bolzano, in winter and during Christmas, are two destinations impossible not to love. Perfect for those who want to experience hiking among snowy trails and mountains, suitable for those who like to ski and also perfect for the kind of tourist who wants to immerse themselves in the beauty of the place (especially the culinary ones). Bolzano, for example, is also a stone’s throw away from some southern German villages that can be reached by train within the day. Beyond that, both Trento and Bolzano are two priceless gems of Italy, magical especially at Christmas.
Christmas in Naples
What is there to say about the city of Naples? It is a crossroads of cultures, of customs, of pizza, of sun and sea. At Christmas it becomes a real sub -universe where old traditions merge with the new age. To visit Naples precisely during the holidays is to experience a unique thrill. The city is characteristic, and it is easy to get lost among its beauties, but it is also nice to walk around the streets, admire the Quarters, Via Toledo and the Umberto Gallery. On food it has no equal. The fish is always fresh and cheap, and the piazza is a real asset. Moreover, it is so open and inclusive that it has become a meeting point for the LGBT community.
Christmas in Modena
And if you are looking for a Christmas atmosphere but experienced at a slower and more cadenced pace, then visiting Modena is the right destination. Located just a few kilometers from Bologna, the city is very delightful and here you can savor the true essence of Emilia. It is built to perfection, between ancient and modern, between tradition and innovation. Famous for its good food-among cured meats and pasta dishes, Modena is best-the city also offers an interesting insight into the architecture of the 1500s. It is also very inclusive, and in the evening, the Ghirlandina with its trendy bars becomes a meeting point for quiet fun.
Christmas in Florence (and the boroughs).
There would be a separate chapter to open on Florence. In fact, especially at Christmas, it is one of the most visited cities in our country. Accomplice to its artistic beauty and good food, Florence is the most desired vacation destination. To be experienced without ifs and buts, the city is a true pearl, so beautiful that it is almost impossible to describe and find a suitable adjective. What is more, it is so close to the medieval villages as San Gimignano and Volterra, that the bar of quality is being raised higher and higher. A visit and tasting in one of the many taverns scattered around the town is a must.
Christmas in Verona
We conclude this trip to Veneto and the beautiful home of panettone and Romeo and Juliet. Verona is a compact city but perfect for a holiday weekend. It is also seen in a single day but that does not detract from its beauty. During Christmas it dresses itself in its brightest colors: from the Bauli tree in Piazza delle Erbe to the typical (and perhaps a bit pricey) markets in Piazza Dante. But Verona is class, culture and relaxation. A beautiful destination to be experienced in all its nuances.
